About the service
Here at the Gateshead Health, we pride ourselves on the safe, quality care we provide to mothers throughout their pregnancy and in the early days with their baby.
Our community midwives provide, supportive, continuity of care throughout pregnancy and in the early postnatal period which is complimented by our team of hospital midwives providing care during the birth of your baby.
The National Maternity Review in 2016 recommended for improved outcomes in pregnancy, that mothers receive care through a continuity of carer model of care, in which they are cared for by a named midwife and small team of midwives through the whole pregnancy journey, including their birth.
Horizon Continuity of Care team
Since June 2020, our Horizon continuity of care team have been providing continuity of carer to a small group of mothers who live in the Gateshead area and who choose to birth their babies at the QE Gateshead.
In September 2021 we launched a second continuity of carer team, Harbour. We are committed as a maternity service in developing and extending this level of care to all pregnant women and people who choose to birth their babies at the QE Gateshead.
Whilst we develop our models of care to incorporate continuity of care for all mothers, we are committed in providing a safe and quality service of care for all mothers.
Our rollout of continuity of care will be a structured and planned rollout meaning that over the next couple of years, we will be gradually offering this level of care to more mothers with a view to achieving continuity of care for all Gateshead mothers birthing at the QE Hospital by 2024.
