Obstetric consultants
Ian Cameron
I have been a consultant at Gateshead since 2017 having started my medical training in Yorkshire and completed specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the North East.
I see women with a wide range of problems and specialise in minimal access (keyhole) gynaecology operations, including procedures to diagnose problems as well more complex procedures, such as removing ovarian cysts and cancers of the womb. I am very pleased to offer day case hysterectomies, where we aim for patients to be discharged home to recover the same day as having a keyhole hysterectomy performed. I am a Principal Investigator for an exciting national study for women at increased risk of ovarian cancer (PROTECTOR trial).
I am a member of the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) and am pleased to be on the faculty of the northern hub of the BSGE National Training Programme, teaching advanced laparoscopic skills to budding minimal access Gynaecologists.
I also look after pregnant women with a weekly antenatal clinic, as well as regularly being the consultant on call for Labour Ward and performing elective caesarean section operating lists. I have been the obstetric lead for the Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme – a national initiative to improve care for women and babies – and have run projects within our department to improve the detection of pregnant women with diabetes and the management of babies who require additional care after delivery.
I am an educational supervisor for both Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and GPs in training and run a regional training day for HENE. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my young family and love my native Northumbrian countryside.
Vai Deshpande
I joined Queen Elizabeth Hospital as a Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine in 2011. I continue to contribute to the Maternity and Gynaecology services in the Trust as well as IVF treatment at Gateshead Fertility unit.
I take pride in being able to provide continuity of care for women on their reproductive journey from assisted conception through IVF and supporting them through their pregnancy right up to their delivery and beyond.
I have a keen interest in Research in Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine. As the Research Lead for Obstetrics I am the Principal Investigator for several national trials which in time will make a difference in improving patient care through better Evidence Based Medicine.
