Day surgery is when a patient is admitted to hospital, has surgery and is discharged on the same day.
There are a wide range of non-emergency surgical procedures that can be carried out as day surgery.
We also manage a number of minor emergency and minor trauma cases as day cases.
We believe that this type of surgery has considerable advantages for our patients, the public and the NHS as a whole because:
- waiting times are shorter.
- there is less risk of cancellation saving the NHS money.
- there is less disruption to patient’s lives and they can enjoy the comfort of recovering at home.
- there is reduced risk of cross infection.
- it is more efficient because procedures can be scheduled more predictably.
What is classed as a day surgery procedure?
There are hundreds of procedures that are classed as day case surgeries using guidelines from the British Association of Day Surgery. These could be anything from surgery to correct small knee or shoulder injuries, to having bunions removed.
About our day surgery unit
Our day unit is open from 7:30am-9:30pm Monday to Friday and 7:30am-6:00pm on Saturday.
Our surgeries take place in the Peter Smith Surgery Centre and the theatres in the main hospital.
Your place for recovery will normally be in the Peter Smith Surgery Centre.
