We are Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, better known as Gateshead Health.
“Small enough to stay personal and large enough to provide high-quality compassionate care.”
Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust) is dedicated to delivering outstanding and compassionate care to our patients and communities. Based in the North East of England, we provide a comprehensive range of hospital, community, and older people’s mental health services to a local population of approximately 200,000, with specialist services extending across a much wider region.

Our Services
Our primary healthcare services are delivered across four key locations in Gateshead:
Community Diagnostic Centre at the Metrocentre – newly opened in October 2024 to enhance diagnostic accessibility.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital – our main acute hospital providing a wide range of specialist and general healthcare services.
Bensham Hospital – offering rehabilitation, therapy-led services, and outpatient care.
Blaydon Urgent Treatment Centre – providing urgent but non-life-threatening care to patients.

Beyond our local services, we provide specialist screening, gynaecology-oncology, pathology, and breast services across a wider geographic footprint, covering parts of the North East, Humberside, Cumbria, and Lancashire. We also operate one of the top ten IVF clinics in the country through the Gateshead Fertility Centre, helping to create hundreds of new families in the North East.
Our People
We employ over 5,100 staff who are dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care, supported by many valued volunteers from our local communities. Our team is committed to maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence and patient experience.
Innovation and Excellence
Gateshead Health has built a national and international reputation for excellence in gynaecological cancer treatment and is at the forefront of advancing healthcare through new technologies such as robotic-assisted keyhole surgery. We also run specialist bowel screening services, covering around 7 million people.
Our maternity services are rated among the very best in the country, and our treatment for gynaecological cancers has built up a positive reputation nationally and internationally.

We are also the North-Eastern hub for the National Bowel Cancer and AAA Screening Programmes, covering a population of around seven million people.
We deliver cutting edge care in our state-of-the-art facilities. Including our Emergency Care Centre, Pathology Centre of Excellence and the Peter Smith Surgery Centre.

Our Subsidiary: QE Facilities Limited
The Trust wholly owns QE Facilities Limited (QEF), established in 2014, which provides essential estates, facilities, procurement, and transport services. Profits generated by QEF are reinvested into patient care, ensuring our services continually evolve to meet the needs of our patients and communities.

Our Commitment to Collaboration
We are a proud partner in Gateshead Cares, working collaboratively with health and care providers across the region to improve patient outcomes. Through the Alliance Agreement, we reinforce system-wide accountability and cooperative working to enhance care across Gateshead and beyond.
Additionally, we are an active member of the Great North Healthcare Alliance, which enables us to work in partnership with other healthcare providers to drive innovation, share best practices, and improve patient outcomes across the North East and Cumbria.
The Great North Healthcare Alliance is a partnership between the NHS Trusts in Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumbria, and North Cumbria. By working together, we believe we can deliver better care for our local communities. Together, we care for 1.3 million patients across 4,600 square miles. We employ 40,000 staff and have an annual budget of around £3.4 billion. By bringing together our resources, expertise, and skills, we can create a healthcare system that delivers world-class care.
Gateshead Care Partnership
Since October 1 2016, a new organisation called the Gateshead Care Partnership has been providing NHS community services across the borough by bringing together teams from the NHS, Community Based Care Ltd (whose membership comprises all Gateshead GPs) and Gateshead Council.

This innovative new partnership enables the whole system to work together more effectively so that all the experts from doctors and nurses to GPs and social workers are working together on better, more responsive care. By coming together in this way, we bring everyone into a single organisation with patient care at its heart.
