The role of carers
Carers play a vital role in the NHS and provide much-needed care and support for so many of our patients.
Here at Gateshead, carers are extremely valued and we are committed to providing as much support and advice as we can.
Carers are likely to know more about our patients than anyone else. The knowledge they have of an individual’s health problems – especially if they are complex – can help us to look after them better. However, we also know it can sometimes be a difficult and demanding job to look after someone, so we want to try and make sure carers are getting some help and support too.
How we support carers
- We support John’s campaign, a national campaign that advocates for carers being welcomed in hospitals. That collaboration between the patients and all connected with them is crucial to patients’ health and wellbeing.
- Carers’ Passports – this passport enables official primary carers, who are continuing to provide care for a loved one whilst they are in hospital, with a range of benefits. These include help with car parking and provision of tea and coffee on the ward.
- Every year we hold events for Carers’ Week where we provide advice, support and the chance to relax
Caregivers Connected Gateshead
The Caregivers Connected service offers support to all those caring for someone residing in Gateshead. It is delivered by Carers Federation. This service is free to access and is funded by Gateshead Council and the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB).

Offering support to every caregiver looking after someone who lives in Gateshead. Providing tailored information and advice to Young Carers, Young Adult Carers, Parent Carers and Adult Caregivers.
