About the service
Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than the expected healing time, and can often be frustrating for patients. It is defined as pain that lasts longer than 3-6 months.
The inpatient pain service has been developed to provide safe and effective pain management to patients undergoing surgery. We are also available to assist with all patients in severe pain that is refractory to standard treatment.
The pain service clinical lead is Dr Vanessa Nesbitt, a Consultant Anaesthetist. The nursing staff undertake a daily ward round assessing post-operative patients who have:
- Epidurals
- Nerve catheters
- Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) devices
- Intrathecal opiates
There is a Consultant led ward round each week. The team are also available to see new referrals, advise and educate staff and patients on the wards.
Service opening hours
The service operates Monday – Friday between 8am – 4pm.
