About the service
The Gateshead Breast Screening Service is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It covers Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Durham and Chester-le-Street.
The Gateshead Breast Screening Service is part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme.
Breast symptomatic one-stop clinic at Grindon Lane
We wanted to update you on a recurring network issue affecting part of our breast service in Sunderland.
Grindon Lane Primary Care Centre hosts breast symptomatic one-stop clinics four days a week. These clinics serve patients from Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland. They provide a single-visit service, including examination, scans and, if needed, biopsy.
We understand this repeat disruption may affect patient choice and mean longer travel for some, so we are working quickly with our network provider to fix the problem. Longer-term improvements are planned, but we are focused on restoring stable service as soon as possible.
Other breast services at Grindon continue as normal.
Patient safety remains our priority. All patients are still being seen, and no appointments are being cancelled.
Breast screening is currently offered at 3-yearly intervals to women aged from 50 until their 71st birthday.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in the UK with more than 55,000 cases diagnoses every year. It is important to find breast cancer early. We know that the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the outcome is likely to be for you.
If you are concerned about your breasts then you should contact your GP immediately. Do not wait for a breast screening appointment.
You will receive a letter when you are eligible for an appointment, you can then book a day and time that is suitable to you.
