The nurses will come and verify your relative who has died. Verification of death will be confirmed, and a form completed which you will be able to give the Funeral Directors of your choice.
You will then be able to contact the funeral director you have chosen.
The Community District Nurse team, Hospice at Home carers or the Out of Hours Palliative Care team will give you a copy of the Gateshead Families and Carers Bereavement Booklet. This provides you with lots of useful information about registering the death and a QR code which links to the Government Website and details about bereavement and documents/benefits and much more.
Please do not worry when the Medical Examiner telephones you, as this is a normal part of the process.

It is important you are aware, that in the event your relative or friend died because of an industrial disease, the nurse will still come to complete the verification process.
However, it is normal practice for the Police to attend and complete formal identification. This will be via a call to 101.
This supports the coroner with any pending or future industrial disease legal claims. The police will also arrange transfer of your loved one to the hospital mortuary team who will care for your relative.
