This information leaflet is to provide you with some information about the stoma care nursing team.
We are a group of specialist nurses who have undertaken extra training in the support and education of patients who may or are definitely having the formation of a stoma.
We will:
- give you counselling and information about stomas before your surgery
- Provide you with stoma supplies and literature after your surgery if you have a stoma
- teach you (and your carer/family if required) how to care for your stoma while you are in hospital
- provide you with diet advice which has been developed with dieticians
- provide exercise and lifestyle advice
- offer emotional support and refer you to relevant services if required
- refer you to your local community stoma nurse who will continue to support you at home
- provide you with sufficient stoma supplies when you go home
- arrange your first order of stoma supplies
- provide you with access to telephone support if required
- signpost you to relevant support groups and websites
At clinic today you will have been given a pre surgery care kit which contains written information about stomas, some types of appliances that can be used and access to online patient education videos (scan QR codes on training pack).
You will normally be invited to see one of the stoma care nurses at a clinic at the QE hospital before your surgery. At this appointment you will have the opportunity to chat further about stomas and we can answer any questions. We will mark your tummy with a skin marker pen this is called ‘siting’ and guides the surgeon where to place the stoma.
