  • Remove the crutches from your arms completely.
  • Hold the crutches in one hand or place your crutches near chair.

WALKING

If you have been told NOT to put any weight on injured leg:

  • Keep the affected leg off the ground by holding it slightly in front with the knee slightly bent.
  • Move the crutches one pace forward, slightly apart and make sure they are level.
  • Take your weight on your hands.
  • Move your body forward (hop) between the crutches – you’re allowing unaffected leg to swing through.

If you have been told you CAN put some weight on injured leg:

  • Move the crutches one pace forward.
  • Place the injured leg on the ground level with the crutches, which supports some of your body weight.
  • Step through with your unaffected leg.

Please return your crutches to A&E when you have finished using them so that other people can use them.
