The diagnosis of a small fracture (or break) of the radial head or neck of your elbow has been made at your visit to the A&E Department / Walk-In Centre.
This injury will almost always heal up well and no specific treatment is likely.
You will have been provided with an arm sling. This will hold your arm in a comfortable position for the first few days. Gradually wean yourself from the sling as the pain settles and this is likely to take 3-4 weeks. It is important to begin gently moving the elbow to prevent stiffness and ensure quickest return to function. Regular paracetamol and ibuprofen should be taken during this time.
Once you are moving your elbow freely and your pain has settled you can gradually return to activities involving lifting (usually 4-6 weeks). It is likely you will have some loss of the ability to extend your arm fully at your elbow, and this is likely to be on a permanent basis.
