Physical Counter Manoeuvres

The following actions may help you when you feel dizzy

Before you get out of bed:

  • Straighten and bend your elbows and knees repeatedly for one minute in bed
  • Sit on the side of the bed and straighten and bend your elbows and knees repeatedly for one minute

These simple exercises will help get blood flowing.

If you are dizzy when you stand:

  • Sit down immediately and clench your fists and your leg muscles
  • If you cannot find a place to sit, cross your legs tightly and tense the muscles in your arms and legs
  • Lie down with your feet in the air. This is the most effective way to relieve symptoms promptly

If you are standing for a long time

  • Clench and unclench your calf and buttock muscles
  • Stand with your legs crossed tightly if this does not affect your balance
  • Shift your weight from one leg to the other
  • March on the spot
  • Rotate your ankles one at a time
  • Tiptoe/rock from ball to heel of foot

If advised by clinic

  • Make sure that you take salt with your food
  • Drink at least 1.5 litres or 3 pints of water before lunch
  • Make sure that you drink a lot of fluids when exercising and in hot weather
