Exercise is an important part of lymphoedema management. It can help stimulate lymph flow and help decrease the swelling in your legs.
When your muscles contract they act as a pump which stimulates the flow of lymph fluid through the body.
These exercises should be done whilst sitting in a chair. Always ensure you are wearing your compression garments whilst completing the exercises. Your physiotherapist will instruct you on the exercises and it is important that you try to complete the routine at least once a day.
- Start by taking three slow deep breaths using your stomach muscles. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
- Clench your buttock muscles together and hold for five seconds. Repeat five times.
- Lift up your leg at your hip and knee. Use alternate legs (as if marching in the chair). Repeat 20 times.
- Lift your leg out straight, fully extending the knee. Repeat with alternate legs 10 times.
- Raise your heels off the floor and repeat 10 times.
- Finally hold your legs straight out in front of you and move your feet up and down. Repeat 10 times.
- Take three deep breaths using your stomach muscles. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
- Then repeat the whole exercise programme once more.
