A FibroScan is a type of ultrasound scan that uses high frequency sound waves. It is a simple, painless, non-invasive test that measures the amount of fibrosis (scarring) and fat you have in the tissues of your liver.
Why do I need a FibroScan?
The doctor or nurse who you have seen in clinic or on the ward has recommended you have the test to help us understand the condition of your liver.
What are the benefits of having the scan? Having the FibroScan will help the doctor or nurse understand how much scarring you have in your liver which will then help them plan your treatment.
Are there any alternatives to having the FibroScan?
One option would be to have a liver biopsy. This procedure is performed within the Radiology Department. If you do require a liver biopsy your doctor or nurse will explain the procedure in more detail and you will be provided with some information to read before you have the biopsy.
Do I need to prepare for the scan?
Please do not eat or drink anything for three hours before your scan. If you need to you can have small sips of clear fluid, but please try and avoid drinking large amounts of fluid. You should continue to take any prescribed medication as usual. Please wear loose clothing as we need access to the right side of your abdomen (tummy).
Are there any special precautions?
If you are pregnant or have any implantable devices such as a pacemaker or internal defibrillator you can still have the scan but please let the doctor or nurse know of this before you have the FibroScan.
What to expect during the procedure
You will be asked to lie on an examination couch and place your right arm above your head. The nurse will feel your abdomen (tummy) to find the right place to perform the scan. They will then place the probe on your abdomen and trigger the probe to start. The high frequency sound waves will be sent out of the probe in pulses. These pulses will pass through your skin to your liver and then bounce back. You should not feel any pain. This process will be repeated ten times to make sure we get an accurate result. The mean average reading will then be calculated by the scanner which will then inform your doctor or nurse your liver stiffness in numbers. The scan should take no more than 20 minutes to perform.
What if a result cannot be obtained?
A FibroScan is not always successful, this can be due to a variety of reasons; your body weight can affect the ability to get a reading, or the spacing between your ribs (intercostal spaces) may be too narrow and affect the readings. If this is the case, it will be discussed with you, and a further plan made.
