The diagnosis of an elbow injury causing fluid in the joint (an effusion), but no definite fracture, has been made at your A&E Department / Walk-in Centre visit.
You will have been provided with an arm sling. This will hold your arm in a comfortable position for the first few days. Gradually, wean yourself from the sling as the pain settles.
This type of injury normally heals well without any problems. You will initially experience pain and swelling which should gradually settle over a period of 2-3 weeks. It is important to keep gently moving the elbow to prevent stiffness and ensure quickest return to function. Regular paracetamol and ibuprofen should be taken during this time.
Once they are moving their elbow freely and their pain has settled, they can return to activities such as swimming and PE (usually 4-6 week). Your child may take several weeks to regain full extension of the arm at the elbow.
