The very first Charity Grand Slam golfing event was held on 30 June in support of QE Charitable Funds, the charity for Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. Five teams entered the 18-hole tournament in hopes of coming away with the exclusive Radio Tyneside 2023 Trophy, donated and presented by the charity’s very first corporate partner, Radio Tyneside.
The event was hosted at and sponsored by Ravensworth Golf Club, which wanted to support its local hospital. The club provided a breath taking course and excellent facilities for the event. The participants enjoyed the Texas Scramble competition along with special challenges for some of the holes across the course. The winning team of the tournament was ‘FORE’ Hour Wait from the emergency care team based at the Queen Elizabeth (QE) Hospital with an astounding 53 points on a 69-par course with a 69.8 rating.
One of the winners from ‘FORE’ Hour Wait, Noel Renton said “The day was great. It was an excellent way to have a break from the busy pressures of the NHS and to spend time having fun with colleagues. I would definitely recommend it to other people, although it’ll be hard to stop ‘FORE’ Hour Wait from making it back-to-back wins.”
Runners up were the Saltwell Old Boys’ Team 2 with 58.2 points followed very closely by Team Fore Right with 59.8 points. Saltwell Old Boys’ Team 3 came in at 4th with Saltwell Old Boys Team 1 coming in 5th. However, plenty of prizes were up for grabs the spot prize winners included the ‘nearest to the pin awards’ which were won by James Taylor and James Katirai, as well as the ‘longest drive’ award won by John Warren.
The participants then enjoyed a meal and drinks at the award ceremony held in the Ravensworth Golf Club house displaying beautiful views of Gateshead. Awards and prizes were presented with a huge thank you to Ravensworth Golf Club for their sponsorship of the event and donation of golfing prizes and special thank you to Heworth Golf Club, Whickham Golf Club, Chester-Le Street Golf Club and Birtley Golf Club for their prize donations of 4 ball vouchers and a donation from First Fix Plastics, Gateshead. Prizes were gratefully received by our winning players.
