St Bede’s Summer Fete celebrated the opening of the redeveloped garden for patients and families

Gateshead’s St Bede’s unit celebrated its newly renovated garden, with a summer fate. All of this was made possible thanks to kind donations to Gateshead Health Charity.

Held on Saturday 29 June at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the day brought together a warm crowd of loyal supporters, often referred to as the “extended family” of St Bede’s, who generously contribute to fundraising efforts to provide the best possible support for patients and their families.

Celebrating the opening of the garden

St Bede’s is a palliative care unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which cares for people at various stages of their illness providing treatment, respite care, and end-of-life care. The garden offers a welcoming sanctuary for patients and their families. Accessible from all patient rooms, it provides a peaceful space for spending time outdoors and creating lasting memories. A unique angel created by Square Peg Joinery adds a touch of serenity to the area.

The Fete also unveiled the St Bede’s “Memory Tree,” designed, built, and donated as a gift to the unit by Dale Fabrications, it is nestled in a newly designated quiet reflection area of the garden. Families can purchase personalised engraved hearts to add to the tree, honouring and celebrating the lives of loved ones. Proceeds from these hearts will go directly towards supporting St Bede’s patients and their families.

Clare Drummond, Gateshead Health Charity Manager said:

It was an amazing turnout as always at the St Bede’s Charity Fete. You can feel the family atmosphere and the real sense of support and appreciation for the team and the work that they do. The positive impact of fundraising events is readily apparent when you see the improved environment for patients and their families within the unit

Keely Taylor, Ward Manager at St Bede’s also wanted to say a special thank you to all of the families of patients who continue to help raise funds, which allows the team to continue to improve things for their patients. “I would also like to thank everyone who has volunteered today and made donations, we could not do this without you. We look forward to seeing everyone again for our next event which is our Elvis Day on Saturday 17 August 2024.”
