Ashleigh Hornsby is a radiographer at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. This year, she is excited to participate in the upcoming Great North Run. For Ashleigh, running is not just a pastime; it serves as her stress reliever, particularly after long and busy days. A few years ago, the radiology department initiated a running group to promote physical and mental wellness during the challenging times of COVID-19, and Ashleigh eagerly joined. She has found a sense of camaraderie and motivation among her fellow runners.

In 2021, she and several colleagues took part in the Great North Run Solo Challenge, successfully raising around £1,500 for the Gateshead Health Charity. Since then, they have continued running on and off, and last year, Ashleigh completed the Great North Run in memory of her mam, raising £340 for Asthma and Lung UK. Her mam, Lynne Graham, passed away unexpectedly in July 2024, due to an acute exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Lynne was a lifelong resident of Gateshead, having lived first in Beacon Lough and later in Beacon Lough East, where Ashleigh grew up.

Through her fundraising efforts for Gateshead Health Charity, for respiratory care and radiology, Ashleigh aims to honour her mother’s memory and give back to the community. She hopes that her contributions will help others suffering from respiratory diseases receive the essential treatment and care they need. Ashleigh encourages everyone to consider donating, as COPD impacts many individuals within the community, and together, they can make a meaningful difference.
