Pat’s big heart shines bright for the chemo day unit

At Gateshead Health Charity, we love to celebrate people who go above and beyond to help others. One very special person is Pat Stephenson. Pat is one of our most dedicated fundraisers, and her story is truly inspiring.

On Saturday 12 April, a fundraising event took place at the St Alban’s Centre to raise money for Gateshead Health’s Chemo Day Unit. Pat had planned this wonderful event herself. But just a few days before, she became ill and was admitted to Ward 8 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the very same hospital that she has raise so much money for.

Even though she was poorly, Pat didn’t give up. From her hospital bed, she used her mobile phone to lead her team of family and friends. Thanks to their hard work and Pat’s determination, they raised an amazing £556.80 at the event and £229 online through her JustGiving page. The day included a raffle, tombola, crafts and a bake sale!

Pat’s love for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital runs deep. She believes the hospital is at the heart of Gateshead and its surrounding communities. She wants to give back by helping others who also need care, comfort, and support. Over the years, Pat has raised money for many parts of the hospital, including the Critical Care Fund, Children’s Unit, Cancer Services, Stoma Care, Respiratory Care, and now, Cardiology.

This Easter was a special time for Pat and her family. Last year, on 30 April 2024, Pat’s husband sadly passed away. Since then, her family have marked every “first” together, first birthday, first Christmas, and now, the first Easter without him. Pat really wanted to spend Easter Sunday with her family, just like they used to.

Thanks to the kind and caring team on Ward 8, Pat got her wish. She said a massive thank you to the staff for their support and expert care. She was able to enjoy a sunny Easter day with her family, full of smiles and memories. She now treasures a photo from that day, which holds a special place in her heart.

Pat isn’t stopping there! She’s already organised another event to support patients, with her sister Kath — who regularly lends a hand. On Wednesday 14 May, she will be holding a stall in the hospital Atrium from 10am to 4pm to raise awareness and funds for the Cardiology Unit. All the money raised will help make patients more comfortable during their stay.

Pat’s strength, kindness and love for her community are truly amazing. Everyone at Gateshead Health Charity is so proud of her, and very thankful.

Thank you, Pat, for being a shining star in the Gateshead Health family.
