Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust’s cancer care has been highly praised by patients in a recent national survey assessing cancer care in England.
The National Cancer Patient Experience Survey takes place annually, covering a wide range of topics regarding the care patients receive during their cancer journey, including everything from first appointments to ongoing treatment and support.
Patients gave Gateshead Health a rating of 9.2 out of 10 overall for their cancer care (national average is 8.9). Other survey results include:
- 100% said the care team reviewed the patient’s care plan with them to ensure it was up to date
- 98% of patients said a member of their care team helped them create a care plan to address any needs or concerns
- 96% of respondents said they had a main point of contact within the care team
- 95% of patients said the whole care team worked well together
- 95% said they were always given enough privacy when receiving diagnostic test results
- 92% of patients felt they received all the information they needed about cancer diagnostic tests
- 88% said family and/or carers were definitely involved as much as they wanted them to be in decisions about treatment options
- 84% of patients said they definitely got the right level of support for their overall health and well being from hospital staff
These results are a testament to the care and compassion shown by the cancer care teams. When patients feel listened to, supported, and involved in decisions about their care, it can lead to better outcomes and a more positive experience throughout their cancer journey. By prioritising dignity, empathy, and clear information, the team is making a real difference to patients and their families.
