Norovirus update – important information for visitors

Norovirus (the diarrhoea and vomiting bug) is circulating in the community and has affected a number of our wards. Norovirus spreads very easily through hands, surfaces and shared spaces, so we are taking steps to limit infection and keep everyone safe.

Norovirus is a common winter virus that causes sickness and diarrhoea. Symptoms can include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Feeling unwell

What this means for visitors:

  • Please do not visit if you have had symptoms in the last 48 hours.
  • Visiting may be restricted in affected wards—please check with the nurse in charge.
  • Wash your hands using soap and water when entering and leaving any ward or department.
  • Avoid using patient toilets and only use designated visitor facilities.

How you can help:

  • Encourage friends and family to wash their hands regularly.
  • Keep visits short where possible and avoid sitting on patient beds.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and dispose of it responsibly.
  • Contact the ward before travelling if you are unsure whether you should visit.

Thank you for helping us protect vulnerable patients and reduce the spread of norovirus.
