Sir Paul Ennals CBE was appointed in August as shared chair across Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation Trust, Northumbria Healthcare Foundation Trust and Gateshead Health Foundation Trust. He took up the formal shared chair responsibilities for Newcastle and Northumbria from the start of July and will now take up the chair role in Gateshead Health, from today (1 October), following the end of Alison Marshall’s term.
Sir Paul brings significant leadership experience from national and local organisations, particularly in services for vulnerable children and adults. He was awarded a CBE in 2002 and knighted in 2009 for services to children.
At Gateshead Health, Dr Gerry Morrow has been appointed vice chair. Dr Morrow is currently a Non-Executive Director at the Trust and a GP by background. He is also a medical director and editor at a healthcare technology company and contributes to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as the editor for Clinical Knowledge Summaries.
Sir Paul Ennals said: “I have already spent time in Gateshead as part of my induction and have seen first-hand the commitment of staff to patients and their communities. I am excited to take on this role formally as part of the Great North Healthcare Alliance and to work alongside colleagues in Gateshead, Newcastle and Northumbria to strengthen services locally and support closer collaboration across the region.”

I look forward to supporting colleagues, listening to patients and working with partners as we build on the strong foundations already in place. Together with Paul, I want to help ensure Gateshead Health continues to thrive while contributing to the work of the wider Alliance.”
Together, Sir Paul and Dr Morrow will support closer working through the Great North Healthcare Alliance, while ensuring each trust continues to serve its local patients and communities.
In addition, Maggie Pavlou has been reappointed as Chair of QE Facilities, Gateshead Health’s subsidiary company, where she will continue to provide strong leadership and support.
