Gateshead NHS staff welcomed local students into the hospital this week for a careers day that showcased all of the exciting opportunities available in the NHS in Gateshead.
The learning and development team at Gateshead Health put together a day’s workshop for 25 Year 10 students from Kingsmeadow Community School to visit the QE Hospital.
The aim of the visit is to connect with the future workforce and showcase all the different roles available within the NHS.
Catherine Cassley, learning and development facilitator said, “We are extremely excited to welcome the year 10 students in clinical skills and show them how fantastic it is to work for Gateshead.
“Our last visit was in 2019 with over 100 students and due to covid we have had to delay this opportunity for them, but we are delighted to restart the workshops again.
“We hope by showcasing the wide range of job roles we have available within the NHS, we can encourage more young people to understand the importance of healthcare roles. These roles vary from pharmacy, nursing, AHPs and many roles within QE Facilities.”
Diane Goddard, sixth form pastoral support at Kingsmeadow Community School said, “Our year 10 careers visit to the QE Hospital was very inspiring.
“The staff put so much effort into preparing engaging and informative sessions that really broadened our students’ awareness of the range of roles and entry routes into the NHS, showing students that there is so much on offer beyond the well-known careers of nursing, doctors and midwifery.
“The session on dementia awareness was a valuable addition given how many of our students are likely to know and meet people with these diseases whether it be through their personal life or work in the future. Thank you to all involved.”
Here is what the students had to say:
‘I think it was a good insight into all the different types of roles in the hospital and I feel it will help me choose my career in the future’.
