Gateshead records best-ever results in national inpatient survey

Patients have rated their experience of care at Gateshead among the Trust’s best ever, according to the latest National Adult Inpatient Survey.

More than nine in ten patients – 91% – rated their overall experience of care at Gateshead seven out of ten or higher, up from 85% the previous year.

The results also show particularly strong feedback about the care patients received from staff:

  • 100% said they were treated with kindness and compassion
  • 100% said they were treated with respect and dignity
  • 99% had confidence and trust in the doctors treating them
  • 99% had confidence and trust in nurses.

The 2025 results are Gateshead Health’s strongest to date and show improvement across a range of areas of patients’ experience.

Ten areas improved significantly compared with the previous year, with no areas showing a significant decline.

Among the improvements, 80% of patients said they did not have to wait too long to get to a ward bed, up from 71% in 2024.

The proportion of patients who felt they received the right amount of information about their condition or treatment also increased, from 82% to 89%.

Overall, Gateshead scored significantly better than the survey average in 34 of the 47 areas assessed, with no areas where it scored significantly worse.

Dr Sean Fenwick, Chief Executive at Gateshead Health, said: “These results are a real reflection of the care our staff provide to patients every day.

“What matters most to me is what patients are saying about the way they were treated. To see 100% reporting that they were treated with kindness and compassion and with respect and dignity is particularly encouraging.

“We have also seen significant improvement across a number of areas at a time when NHS services continue to work under considerable pressure. Our staff deserve enormous credit for that.

“We won’t be complacent. We will look closely at what patients have told us, including where their experience could be better, and use that to continue improving our services.

“But these are exceptionally positive results and I want to thank colleagues across Gateshead Health for everything they do for our patients.”

The Trust will now use the findings to look in more detail at patients’ experiences across individual services, building on areas that are working well and identifying where further improvements can be made.

The National Adult Inpatient Survey is carried out annually as part of the Care Quality Commission’s NHS Patient Survey Programme. A total of 435 Gateshead Health patients completed the 2025 survey, which was carried out between 19 January and 20 April 2026.
