If you need to visit the Queen Elizabeth Hospital overnight between Wednesday 22 July and Sunday 26 July 2026, please be aware of planned road works that will affect how you access the hospital grounds.
Urgent resurfacing works will take place on Queen Elizabeth Avenue from 8:00pm to 6:00am each evening between 22 and 26 July. There will be no vehicle access to main hospital site entrance (Entrance A) during the works, however all hospital services will be open as usual, and emergency care is unaffected.
Key information for patients and visitors:
- Road closures: Queen Elizabeth Avenue, including the main entrance (Entrance A) and parts of Windy Nook Road, will be closed to general traffic between 8:30pm and 6:00am each night.
- General access: If you are visiting the hospital, attending an overnight appointment, or accessing the Emergency Department (A&E) by car, you must enter the site via Entrance C on Windy Nook Road.
- Parking: All car parks, including the main public car park (car park 1) will remain open, but you must access it by following the diversion signs from the Windy Nook entrance (Entrance C). Please allow extra time for your journey.
- Emergency access: Access for emergency ambulances will be maintained via a dedicated emergency route, ensuring patients requiring critical care face no delays.
The road will fully reopen to normal traffic at 6:00am each morning. Gateshead Council is advising anyone who would usually approach the hospital from Old Durham Road to use Carr Hill Road, diversion signs will be in place.
