We are pleased to share that out of 163, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead is among the top 10 performing units and highly commended for professional development nationally, based on feedback from our trainees.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) oversees the training and regulations in obstetrics and gynaecology. The RCOG gathers training data from across the country, analyses it based on survey questions, and uses the results to rank overall performance in obstetrics and gynaecology training.
The RCGO assessed our trainees’ level of support, work-life balance, training outcomes, and work experience. The overall ranking considers criteria such as educational support and supervision, local and regional training opportunities, general and procedural gynaecology and obstetrics, professional development, clinical governance, work environment, behavioural experiences, overall recommendations, and basic ultrasound skills.
Isaac Evbuomwan, Consultant Gynaecologist & Reproductive Medicine (IVF) Specialist and College Tutor for the department comments on the award:
Achieving this prestigious award in the course of us ‘just doing our job’ makes us particularly proud with regard to training and education in our department. I believe I have the best colleagues one could ever wish for and this makes one’s life easier and the job, enjoyable!
The award is not just regional but national and recognises us as top 10 in the country. To achieve such recognition is a huge team effort, and trainers must consistently support and deliver training at a high standard. The backbone of this is our functionality and being on the same page

Some of our trainees share their experience of training at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust:
“Honestly it’s been such an eye-opener working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and seeing how much a team of consultants with the right approach can change how a trainee can feel when coming on a shift.
It has been such a lovely year and you deserve all the credit you get as a department. I hopefully will be back with you again.”
“Thank you for such a lovely year, I have learned and laughed lots. The QE is a special team and I feel proud to be a small part of it this year”
Congratulations to the entire team for their outstanding effort and dedication in delivering exceptional support to our new trainees. Your hard work and commitment have truly made a positive impact on the development and success of our trainees and Trust.
