Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust is delivering a major redevelopment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital to enhance care for women, children and young people across the region.
Work is progressing well on the transformation of two former inpatient wards into modern, purpose-built spaces: a new Colposcopy Department and a dedicated Children and Young People’s Department. Construction began in January 2025 and the new facilities are expected to open in Autumn 2025.
Gateshead Health Charity funded £18,000 for the project, which plays a vital role in enhancing the facilities and services available to the community. Additionally, the development is being delivered with the support of QE Facilities (QEF), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trust, which is overseeing the project in partnership with principal contractor Robertson CE Ltd and a multidisciplinary design and engineering team.
Located within the hospital’s original 1930s building, the project has required significant enabling works to bring the infrastructure up to modern standards. Mechanical and electrical installations are already well underway, with interior finishes and decoration due to begin later this year.

Gateshead Health is committed to creating clinical environments that support high-quality care and a better patient experience. The new Children and Young People’s Unit will feature calming design elements and play areas tailored to the needs of younger patients. The upgraded Colposcopy Department will provide a more dignified and welcoming space for women accessing vital services.

Trudie Davies, Chief Executive of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“This is a really exciting development for the Trust and our community. Providing child-friendly, reassuring spaces for young patients and a dignified environment for women attending colposcopy services are key steps in ensuring every visit feels safer, more comfortable, and more supportive.”
QEF is supporting the Trust through project management, procurement, and technical oversight to ensure the scheme is delivered to a high standard, on time and within budget.
The project also includes strong social value commitments. All contractors were required to demonstrate support for local employment, skills development, community engagement and sustainability. Robertson CE Ltd is currently hosting a local college student on site and is managing construction waste through the SmartWaste system.
This redevelopment is a key part of the Trust’s wider commitment to investing in its estate to support exceptional healthcare.
