An endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the interior of the body. During the procedure, a flexible tube equipped with a tiny camera, known as an endoscope, is gently inserted through a natural orifice, such as the mouth. The role of an endoscopy nurse varies from working within a team to carrying out observations and tests to help patients with diagnosis.
Gemma Jeal, staff nurse in the Endoscopy department shares her experience:
Working as an endoscopy nurse is an incredibly diverse and fulfilling role within the field of nursing. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities for learning, making it an endlessly fascinating and dynamic career”.
Our work involves conducting a wide range of endoscopies, including colonoscopies, gastroscopies, cystoscopies, and bronchoscopies. Collaboration is key as we maintain close working relationships with various hospital staff, including surgeons and specialists from different departments. Teamwork is fundamental to ensuring the smooth and high-quality operation of our unit, with the patient’s well-being at the forefront of everything we do.
We take immense pride in our team’s achievement of JAG accreditation, recognising our commitment to delivering top-tier gastrointestinal endoscopy services in the UK.
The patient journey at Gateshead Health is carefully designed; starting from the moment a patient arrives at the unit and is greeted at reception. They are then guided to the booking room, where a nurse provides a detailed explanation of the procedure, conducts necessary assessments, obtains consent, and performs any required cannulation. This is followed by the procedure itself, which takes place in one of our five dedicated rooms. Following the procedure, the patient moves to our recovery area for post-procedure care before discharge.
Our goal is to provide patients with a seamless journey that prioritises their well-being above all else”
