Celebrating 50 years of dedication: Nurse marks half a century of service at Gateshead Health

Julie Johnston began her career at Gateshead Health on 11 August 1975 at just 16 years old, starting as a cadet nurse. Interestingly, her first role wasn’t on the wards, but in the laundry and sewing room. She soon took on a variety of other duties, including delivering post across the wards and departments, all before formally beginning her nursing journey.

In 1980, Julie successfully passed her final exam as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMHN), with her official presentation taking place in 1981. Over the years, she worked across all the wards. While at work, Julie met her husband, Brian, who was also a nurse. After getting married and having two children, Julie moved to permanent night shifts to help balance work and childcare.

Julie was offered a role in the central team of the Community Psychiatric Nursing (CPN) department, stepping into management as part of this transition.

Julie initially retired at the age of 55, qualifying under the Mental Health Officer status. However, her commitment to the profession didn’t end there. She returned part-time as a Band 6 nurse and continues to serve in that role to this day, a testament to her dedication and passion for mental health care.

Reflecting on her career, Julie shares:

I am most proud to be serving the people of Gateshead for 50 years and being in the community and making a difference. The role has been stressful over the years, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it, and it has made me who I am. I will miss the job but especially my ‘work family,’ and thanks for the cherished memories.

Gateshead Health has been supportive, and I’ve been lucky with the managers I’ve had. I didn’t feel like I wanted to go anywhere else.

Since Julie began her career, there has been a significant increase in mental health awareness. People are now more open about their experiences, and the public is more understanding and receptive. This shift has positively supported Julie in her role.

Caroline Mander, Senior Mental Health Support Worker wishes Julie well, “Julie, think back to that day when you walked up that drive at 16 years old, and where you are now. What an achievement! Over the years, you have helped and supported many patients and families as well as being a valued member of the team. 50 years is three quarters of your life, what a massive achievement. Congratulations from everyone that you have worked with!”

Julie, thank you for your extraordinary service. We wish you all the very best in your well earned retirement.
