Gateshead Health Charity held its annual Light Up a Life ceremony on Thursday 4 December at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, bringing together families, staff and local residents to remember loved ones.
The event gave people the chance to sponsor a star in someone’s memory and come together for readings, music and the lighting of the memorial tree. More than 170 stars were dedicated this year.
A new memorial Christmas tree was planted at the hospital for the first time. It will now grow with the event in the years ahead and will remain a lasting feature for everyone who returns each winter.
Actor Jill Halfpenny attended as the evening’s special guest and switched on the lights. Jill, who grew up in the region, has long supported local causes and has a personal connection to the hospital.
The ceremony featured the Gateshead Health Choir and the chaplaincy team, with thanks shared on behalf of Gateshead Health Charity.
Kris Mackenzie, Executive Director Lead for Gateshead Health Charity and Group Director of Finance at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Light Up a Life has become an important moment in our year. It gives people the space to remember loved ones in a way that feels supportive and shared. Seeing all the stars on the new memorial tree was very moving. We are grateful to everyone who sponsored a star or helped make this evening possible.”
The charity expressed its thanks to everyone who supported the event, including Robertson Construction, High Felling Post Office and its customers, QE Facilities estates and catering teams, COOP Funeralcare, Gateshead Council transport and culture teams, Gateshead Libraries digital team and DP Groundworks. The charity also thanked everyone who sponsored a star this year.
