Gateshead Health achieves remarkable success in breast reconstruction surgery

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust has successfully implemented a novel technique of Pre-Pectoral implant-based reconstruction, offering single-stage immediate breast reconstruction procedure for suitable patients. This achievement has resulted in 95-100 percent of cases being performed as day cases.

By prioritising the patient’s safety and aesthetic appearance, Gateshead Health aims to provide the best possible option for suitable candidates. This approach not only avoids multiple procedures but also has significant psychological advantages. By minimising the emotional impact of breast loss and enhancing the quality of life, patients experience shorter recovery periods and improved overall wellbeing.

The success of this achievement can be attributed to effective communication between the healthcare team and patients. Gateshead Health ensures that patients are well-informed about their treatment options and outcomes, enabling timely and inclusive decision-making.

Amy Muldoon, Director of Operations for Surgery at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust said: “The Trust emphasises staff training to provide state-of-the-art treatment in a timely manner, ensuring the right workforce and skill mix for optimal performance and improved patient outcomes.

“The support and collaboration have played a pivotal role in achieving these targets and ensuring high-quality patient care. The dedication and efforts of the team at Gateshead Health have been commendable in achieving this outstanding milestone.

“Longer term, this means that we can focus on reducing patient waiting times for other services to improve all patient experience across our different services.”

Mujahid Pervaz, Clinical Lead for Breast Surgery at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, expressed his pride in this accomplishment. He stated, “The successful implementation of single-stage immediate breast reconstruction as a day case procedure in 95-100 percent of cases is a testament to the teamwork and dedication of all involved at Gateshead Health. By investing in staff training and maintaining the right workforce, we have significantly improved performance and patient outcomes.”

Gateshead Health continues to strive for excellence in women’s health, ensuring the best possible care for patients and setting a benchmark for other healthcare institutions to follow.
