Mr Paul O’Loughlin is a Consultant in Colorectal and General Surgery and the Chief Clinical Information Officer for Gateshead NHS Trust.
Mr O’Loughlin completed medical school in Newcastle in 2001 and surgical training in the North East, prior to commencing as a consultant at QE in February 2014 he completed a specialized fellowship in Oxford.
Since September 2021 Mr O’Loughlin has also been the CCIO for the trust as the clinical lead for digital lead overseeing development of all digital systems within the trust.
In his colorectal practise he has specialist interests in colonic and rectal cancer, complex hernia surgery including parastomal hernia and full abdominal wall reconstruction, complex inflammatory bowel disease, common benign coloproctology and general surgical conditions. He is an active member of the Association of Coloproctology of GB & Ireland (ACPGBI) and the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP), his elective colorectal cancer surgical outcomes are available via the ACPGBI website.
He assists the GynaeOncology service in complex cases of advanced gynaecological that require specific colorectal or abdominal wall surgical input.
He is an active participant in the general surgery emergency oncall and has been the NELA (National Emergency Laparotomy Audit) lead for the trust and the General Surgery and Surgical Business unit lead for Safecare (clinical audit and governance).
Paul has led several safety and quality improvement projects in the trust and has published numerous papers and presented at both national and international conferences.
In his digital role Paul takes responsibility for development of digital systems across the trust, overseeing key clinical safety, reporting, efficiency and documentation improvements.
