Dr Nithya Ratnavelu, MB BCh BAO BSc(HONS) MSc MRCOG, is a consultant gynaecological oncologist at the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre.
Miss Ratnavelu is the regional multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting lead for gynaecological oncology, and the surgical cancer lead for the trust.
As the lead for the regional complex vulva disorders clinic she specialises in surgical management of vulva cancer, and was instrumental in introducing sentinel node techniques to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
An expert laparoscopic surgeon, Miss Ratnavelu also specialises in management of patients with endometrial cancers.
She is a skilled ultraradical surgeon for the management of ovarian cancer.
In addition, Miss Ratnavelu is a council member of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society as North of England representative, NICE liaison officer and member of the guidelines committee.
Nithya graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2003 (MB BCH BAO BSc). She worked in centres across Northern Ireland and the West of Scotland before joining the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre, Gateshead, as a Clinical Research Fellow in 2011.
During this time Nithya obtained a Masters in Clinical Research from Newcastle University, and went on to undertake her Sub-Specialty Training in 2013.

Vulva cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, vaginal cancer, ovarian cancer, colposcopy, Multizonal Intraepithelial Neoplasia (MZIN).
Nithya has been a Consultant Gynaecological oncologist specialising in laparoscopic surgery, complex vulva disorders since 2016. She is the Regional NGOC Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Lead. In her spare time, Nithya is an avid marathon runner.
