Mr Ian Aird is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Fertility Services Lead at the QE Hospital in Gateshead.

Mr Aird spent his post graduate training years in Liverpool and since coming to Gateshead he has led the fertility unit through some very significant changes, including:
- Increasing the number of treatment cycles from 60 per year to over 700 cycles per year
- Leading the introductions of intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatments
- Managing the move to new purpose built premises in 2009
- Leading the introduction of blastocyst transfer and time lapse embryology in 2015.
He was also the HFEA designated Person responsible for 22 years before passing this role on in April 2021.
Recently Mr Aird sat on the Executive committee if the British Fertility Society where he was also the Chair of the Organising Committee of Fertility 2021 – the annual conference of the joint fertility societies in the UK.
Although Mr Aird’s expertise and experience is largely in reproductive medicine and fertility he also has a keen interest in patient safety and risk management. Since January 2017 he has been the departmental lead for Risk and Safecare and in January 2018 he took on the added responsibility of Clinical lead for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Special interests
Mr Aird also has a strong interest in post-graduate training and education. Since June 2018 has been the Head of School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Health Education England – North East and North Cumbria.
Qualifications
MB,ChB, FRCOG, DA
