Dr Helen Estyn-Jones is a consultant paediatrician and epilepsy lead at the QE Hospital in Gateshead.
Helen qualified at the University of Birmingham and, after house jobs, trained in London, as well as spending time abroad working for Unicef and Medecins Sans Frontieres. In 2005 Helen moved to Newcastle and found her professional niche in Gateshead where she completed her training and has worked as a paediatric consultant since 2010, developing her expertise and the epilepsy service for children and young people of Gateshead.
Helen has established a weekly Suspected Seizure Clinic taking referrals from Primary Care, A&E, paediatric colleagues and Mental Health and aiming to offer appointments within 2 weeks of referral.
Helen has also established a weekly epilepsy follow-up clinic offering both face to face and telephone appointments.
Helen and consultant colleagues join a paediatric neurologist in a monthly neurology outreach clinic at QEH, offering expert care closer to home for Gateshead children and young people.
Helen continues to advocate for better support for children, young people and their families living with epilepsy and related long-term conditions. Future service developments will include an epilepsy specialist nurse and improved mental health assessment and support in epilepsy clinic.
