Gateshead Health Charity has received special gift to help people having cancer treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.
Brian Denton, husband of Patricia, who had treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2023, gave the gift in her memory. Brian wanted to say thank you to the nurses and doctors who looked after Patricia with kindness and care.
Brian worked with the Northumberland Freemasons, who gave £10,000 to buy a Paxman Scalp Cooler. This clever machine helps people who are having chemotherapy keep their hair, which can make them feel a bit better during a hard time.
Brian chose Valentine’s Day to visit the hospital and see the new machine, because it’s a day that celebrates love – and he loved Patricia very much. He also added a plaque to the machine to remember her.

Brian Said:
It was lovely to meet the kind team who looked after Patricia. She didn’t want me to see her having chemo, so I never met the nurses. It meant a lot to say thank you. I will love you forever, my sweetheart Patricia.

The new machine was added to the Chemotherapy Day Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Sam Yellowlees, Chemotherapy Services Manager said:
This machine helps people keep their hair when they’re having cancer treatment. That can really help them feel more confident.
We are so thankful to Brian and the Freemasons for this wonderful gift. It will help lots of patients feel a bit better during a tough time.
Paul Winship, who helped with the donation, also came to the hospital to support Brian.
Paul said:
We’re proud we could help. This gift means a lot to us and to Brian, and it will help many people in the community.
Brian’s thoughtful gift will help many people for years to come. It’s a lovely way to remember Patricia and to bring comfort to others.
Thank you, Brian and the Northumberland Freemasons, from all of us at Gateshead Health Charity.
