The Remote DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) course is a clinical appointment that has been developed in partnership with The Open University.

By taking part in a Remote DAFNE course you can learn the DAFNE way of managing your type 1 diabetes from home. This might fit better with your work and home commitments and you don’t need to travel to participate. The DAFNE course is a home-based clinical appointment, and we can supply a letter to your employer to outline the course and required appointments.

The Remote DAFNE course will take six weeks to complete and comprises of:

  • learning from home: online DAFNE sessions that you complete in your own time
  • educator support: scheduled group video calls each week with the DAFNE educator to check in with you and how the course is going.

You will need to take part in a pre-course appointment two to four weeks prior to the course start date, and a follow-up session six weeks after the course ends. You will also have the opportunity to attend an individual appointment six months after the course finish date before an annual review appointment with the DAFNE team.

All the things you will need to complete the course are supplied in the Remote DAFNE course pack and this will be given to you before the course starts.

Each week you will need to spend between three to seven hours completing the learning at home. You do not need to complete all the learning in one sitting, you can dip in and out of the sessions as time allows as long as you catch up in time for your weekly educator support call.

Your educator support calls take around three hours and there will be one call per week on your course day and time. Your local DAFNE team will let you know the course dates and times.

During the call, you will be able to ask questions about the weeks learning. The educator will also ask you some questions about the activities you have done during the week.

You will need some equipment at home to be able to take part in the Remote DAFNE course:

  • WIFI connection
  • Laptop or tablet
  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge
  • Microsoft Teams
  • An e-mail address
  • Kitchen scales

Please ask the DAFNE team if you can’t meet the IT requirements for the course as we do also have the option of face-to-face DAFNE courses.
