Gateshead Health’s Gynaecological Oncology Centre has been recognised as a centre of excellence for advanced ovarian cancer surgery. Earlier this year the team was awarded the accreditation by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO).

For many years the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead has been home to the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre (NGOC). The NGOC provides highly specialised surgeries (tertiary surgical care) to patients from across the North East of England and Cumbria. It has a well-established national and international reputation.

The centre is known for being an early adopter of innovative technologies and techniques. There is a successful programme of clinical and translational research ongoing at the NGOC, which includes recruitment to clinical trials from the National Institution for Health and Care Research (NIHR), portfolio and laboratory based translational research projects.

Mr Porfyrios Korompelis, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist said “I am very pleased to announce that the NGOC has received this very prestigious recognition from the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) as a Centre of Excellence for Ovarian Cancer Surgery.

“This award recognises that we can offer patients the specific skills, experience, organisation, and dedication that are required to achieve outstanding levels of surgical care, and also that we provide a network for education, training and research.”
